Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez suggested members of Congress should get paid more, but a majority of Americans want the complete opposite
This would definitely represent a political tin ear. If there is one thing the average voter has a problem with, judging from many many posts on the subject on this site over the years, it is Congressional pay and the pension scheme Congress enjoys. Even in Washington DC $170,000/year should be enough to get by.
(From The Business Insider)
While a majority of Americans think members of Congress get paid too much, their concept of what Congress members already make is much lower than lawmakers’ actual salaries.
The median guess for a Congress member’s salary in the INSIDER survey was $132,500, well below the $174,000 lawmakers make.
So people think Congress is overpaid even though Congress is paid far more than what the public thinks.
