Young Americans avoid ‘I do’ until student loans are paid off


 

Debt is warping the economy. Student loans are only part of the problem. The Fed sought to put a floor under housing years aago and shut many people out of the market. Add in student loans. Then credit cards. Then personal loans – which are widely used in suburbia now, and one wonders how long all of this can continue.

Just over one-third of millennial and Gen Z respondents say a potential partner’s student or credit card balances could affect their choice of a spouse, depending on the amount of debt. Twenty percent say they’d be fine with student loan debt but not credit debt, while 6% say the reverse.
