COVID Policies Trigger ‘Descent Into Tyranny’ in Australia, Policy Expert Warns ‘It Can Happen Anywhere’
Melbourne, Victoria, is the “most locked down city in the world,” said FOX News host Brian Kilmeade in a “Tucker Carlson Tonight” segment with Gideon Rozner, director of policy at the Institute of Public Affairs.
Australia’s “zero tolerance” COVID policy means citizens in Melbourne can leave home only to:
- shop for essentials
- get vaccinated
- exercise for a maximum of two hours
- attend “authorized” work or education
- provide caregiving
- seek medical help
Those wishing to shop or exercise can’t travel more than 5 kilometers (3 miles) from their home.
From the start, Rozner said Australia pursued a “zero tolerance” policy on COVID:
“The lockdown Melbourne is currently going through — its sixth lockdown — was triggered after just six cases of COVID. Not six deaths, not six cases of hospitalization — six infections.”
The lockdowns have “triggered the descent into tyranny in Australia,” said Rozner. “It’s overwhelmed all of our checks and balances. It’s suppressed all of our individual rights and freedoms.”
And, Rozner said, “If it can happen in Australia, it can happen anywhere.”
Kilmeade and Rozner discussed a new app being tested by the South Australian government to enforce the country’s quarantine rules.
“Returning travelers quarantining at home will be forced to download an app that combines facial recognition and geolocation. The state will text them at random times, and thereafter they will have 15 minutes to take a picture of their face in the location where they are supposed to be. Should they fail, the local police department will be sent to follow up in person.”
This is just the “tip of the iceberg,” warned Rozner:
“This is the same government that rounded up people and put them in quarantine hotels — not because they were sick, but because they visited a venue that a sick person happened to go to: a winery in South Australia — which, by the way, has had extremely few COVID cases.”
Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andrews said the current lockdown restrictions will remain in place until 70% of the adult population has received at least one dose of the COVID vaccine.
Andrews also said the unvaccinated could be “locked out” of venues and events once its 70% single-shot target is met. He said:
“I am not going to lock the whole state down to protect people who would not protect themselves. If you are not vaccinated, and you could be, the chances of you booking a ticket at a sporting event, going to a pub … will be very limited.”
