A report released Friday finds that the number of concealed carry gun permits in the country rose 10.5% in the last year, growing to more than 21 million people.
The report, issued by the Crime Prevention Research Center, finds that the number of people getting concealed carry permits has increased by 48% since 2016, and grew by 10.5% amid the COVID-19 pandemic in the last year.
The 10.5% increase in the last year translates to a record 2 million new permits, compared with the prior year’s record of 1.8 million new permits, according to the report.
Outside of the severely restrictive states of New York and California, 10% of adults in the nation have a concealed carry permit, although that number comes down to an average of 8.3% when those two states are factored in.
In 21 states, laws known as ”constitutional carry” enable citizens to carry concealed guns without a permit at all.
Fifteen states have more than 10% of their respective populations with a permit, with Alabama leading the way with 32.1% percent of adults in that state carrying concealed, the report said.
Six states — Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Texas — each have more than 1 million people with concealed carry permits.
Women carrying concealed guns rose overall during the pandemic by around 2%, with 14 states having 28% of their permits going to that gender, compared with 26% in 2020, according to the report.
Comparatively, permits for women grew 108.7% faster for than for men during the period.
The increase in permits and numerous states passing laws to make carrying a gun easier come as the U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a case next month, the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Corlett, where the high court will weigh in on whether people seeking concealed carry permits need to show ”proper cause” to get a permit. . . .

The number of concealed handgun permits has risen 10.5% since 2020, according to a study from the Crime Prevention Research Center released Wednesday.
The number of permits rose by close to 2 million, shattering the 2017 record by more than 200,000, according to the data, with 8.3% of all U.S. adults holding permits and over 10% holding permits in 15 states.
The number of concealed handguns grew to 21.52 million in 2020, the study showed.
Alabama has the highest concealed carry rate at 32.1%, followed by Indiana at 21.6%, the study noted.
“Permit holders are extremely law-abiding,” the study said. “In Florida and Texas, permit holders are convicted of firearms related violations at one-twelfth of the rate at which police officers are convicted.”
An increase in crime and the defund-the-police movement have both catalyzed the growth in the number of permits, said John Lott, president of the Crime Prevention Research Center.
“The reason for the increase is the same as the increase in gun sales over the last two years, increased crime and concerns that police aren’t able to do their job and that large numbers of inmates released from jails and prisons,” he said.
Women and minorities constitute a notable portion of the increase in permits, according to the study. . . .

During the coronavirus pandemic, the number of concealed handgun permits has skyrocketed to over 21.52 million, according to the Crime Prevention Research Center, a nonprofit that publishes research papers and articles about gun rights.
Researchers said this is a 48 percent increase since 2016, and a 10.5 percent increase over the number of permits counted in 2020.
This increase occurred despite 21 Constitutional Carry states that no longer provide data on all those legally carrying a concealed handgun because people in those states no longer need a permit to carry.
“These numbers are particularly topical given that the U.S. Supreme Court will hear the concealed carry case of New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Corlett in November,” the authors detail. “That case will determine whether those requesting permits need to provide a ‘proper cause,’ which means a good reason for obtaining a permit.”
The authors of the paper, John R. Lott Jr., Carlisle E. Moody and Rujun Wang of the Crime Prevention Research Center, dive deeper into the 21.52 million conceal carry permits, finding that in practice, it means that in most places where people are allowed to carry a concealed handgun, there will be someone carrying a concealed handgun.
In a room with 20 people, that probability of one individual carrying a concealed handgun goes up to 67 percent, the researchers found. . . .

Data released by the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) show that the number of concealed carry permits in America has now surpassed 21.5 million.
The CPRC study shows the exact number of concealed permits is over 21.52 million, which is a “48% increase since 2016.”
Moreover, the current number of permits represents “a 10.5% increase over the number of permits [CPRC] counted a year ago in 2020.”
Yahoo News noted that the number of concealed carry permits increased by “a record two million last year,” surpassing the previous yearly record of increase by 200,000.
Alabama leads the Union in the rate of concealed carry permits, with over 32 percent of Alabama’s adult population being permitted to carry. Indiana is second with a rate of nearly 22 percent of adults being permitted, and Iowa is third with a rate of 16.5 percent.
The CPRC researchers noted that the continued growth of constitutional carry means there is an increasing, and unknown, number of law-abiding Americans who carry guns each day for self-defense apart from the cumbersome process of being permitted.

A Real Clear Investigations’ column by gun scholar John Lott shows that annual defensive gun uses are “four or five times more common that gun crimes.”
Lott notes:
Americans who look only at the daily headlines would be surprised to learn that, according to academic estimates, defensive gun uses — including instances when guns are simply shown to deter a crime — are four to five times more common than gun crimes, and far more frequent than the roughly 20,000 murders or fewer each year, with or without a gun.
He points to a grouping of 17 surveys that find “between 760,000 defensive handgun uses and 3.6 million defensive uses of any type of gun per year, with an average of about 2 million.”
Lott indicated that most people have no idea there are so many defensive gun uses because such uses are not widely reported on the establishment media. Instead, the establishment media appears to focus on gun crimes. . . .

A new study shows concealed handgun permits surged during last year’s pandemic.
According to a study conducted by the Crime Prevention Research Center, the number of permits rose to over 21-million in 2020, an almost 50-percent increase since 2016. This is also an over ten-percent increase from the same time last year.
In 15 states, more than ten percent of adults have permits, with the highest being 32-percent in Alabama. The study also found that permit holders are for the most part law-abiding. . . .

The number of active concealed carry licenses and permits in the U.S. has soared to more than 21.52 million this year, according to the annual report from the Crime Prevention Research Center.
The report, from CPRC founder and President John Lott, Carlisle E. Moody Research Director and Professor at the College of William & Mary, and research associate Rujun Wang, says the spike represents “a 48% increase since 2016,” and amounts to “a 10.5% increase over the number of permits we counted a year ago in 2020.”
The report for 2020 showed 19.48 million active licenses/permits, and that was a hike of 820,000 over the 2019 figure. That happened, the CPRC noted at the time, “despite many states shutting down issuing permits because of the coronavirus.” . . .

The all-knowing Frum wants his readers to believe that guns don’t deter violence. His proof is that we hear more negative stories about guns in the news than positive ones. But John Lott, who is much more astute on the topic than Frum ever could be, debunked that myth years ago. News programs love to share bad news, and many people love to watch it. Deaths and shootings are easier to quantify in this context.

As the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to hear New York State Rifle & Pistol Association V. Bruenon November 3—a case in which the justices are poised to answer whether the Second Amendment protects a right for law-abiding citizens to carry firearms outside their homes (this is the “bear” in the Second Amendment’s “right to keep and bear arms”)—the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) is reporting that the number of Americans with concealed-carry permits has reached 21.52 million.
This, says CPRC, is “a 48% increase since 2016. It’s also a 10.5% increase over the number of permits we counted a year ago in 2020.”
Incredibly, this increase took place even though the number of states with some form of constitutional carry increased to 21 this year. As these 21 states no longer require permits, they no longer have precise data on exactly how many people are legally carrying concealed.
These new numbers were gathered by John R. Lott, Jr. and Rujun Wang, and published in a report titled “Concealed Carry Permit Holders Across the United States: 2021.”
It is further evidence that Americans are exercising this critical constitutional right. With over 100 million gun owners in America, and now with over 20 million Americans with concealed-carry permits (and perhaps millions more carrying in the 21 constitutional-carry states), attorneys representing New York in this critical U.S. Supreme Court case can’t honestly argue that citizens don’t want and need this particular constitutional freedom. Americans are clearly saying they want and need this right. . . .

Bad guys, listen up: John Lott has released a new report outlining the state of legal concealed carry in America. In it, he reveals a staggering 10.5% increase in carry licenses despite (because of?) COVID restrictions. Today, more than 8% of adult Americans have a license to carry a firearm. That number is 10% outside of restrictive, may-issue states.
The good people of Alabama are not only friendly, but they’re also well-fixed when it comes to packing heat. Almost a third of adults in the Yellowhammer State have a carry permit. Perhaps there’s some correlation between well-armed and well-mannered.
Meanwhile, almost a quarter of Indianans are licensed. And don’t forget that twenty-one states now don’t even require law-abiding folks to apply for a license to carry a firearm. . . .
