I Don’t Like College

So, you start going to college, and after some time there you decide: “I don’t like college”. Whew! Feels like a weight off your shoulders eh? Not liking college is fine and deciding to not spend thousands of dollars because of that is even better. In fact, recent reports share that 1 in 3 students will decide to not return for their 2nd year of college. The reasons for this range from, financial issues, family troubles, loneliness and simply just not liking college.

I remember when I was in college, the idea of not liking college was strange. Even though, truthfully, I really didn’t like college. However, everyone seemed to be happy and enjoying their experience, that I thought I was the weird one. It’s nice knowing that more and more students are leaving because they simply don’t like college.

Now that you know you’re not alone because you don’t like college, let’s look at some practical things to consider when making this decision.

FINANCIAL PENALTIES

Before you just pack up your stuff and leave campus, chat with an advisor about any financial penalties that may occur. There are times during the quarter that are better to leave than others, so ask when those are. Is it too late to receive a tuition refund? Can your credits transfer if you leave right now? Is it better to wait out the quarter?

I know you may be feeling antsy, but research the withdrawal policy and process of the college. This may actually save you time and money in the long run.

HAVE A PLAN

We have said this before, but it bears repeating. Just because you are leaving college, does not mean you get to be lazy with your life. In fact, it’s even more important to have a plan and figure out how you’re going to be of value to society. Sit down, come up with a plan and start acting on that plan. We have tons of resources for you if you don’t know where to start.

ALTERNATIVES TO COLLEGE

There are tons of alternatives to college these days. From gap years to apprenticeships to building a business. Your options are endless and they should be explored. Make sure you’re not spending time and money in an area where you aren’t going to learn and thrive. We go into more depth on alternatives to college here. Check it out!

TAKE TIME

Take some time to process this decision before you actually make it. You have looked at the penalties that may occur, you have looked at alternatives to college and you have made a plan. Now, it’s important to sit with all of this information and process it before making a final decision. Step back and imagine your life played out over the next 5 years if you make various decisions. What about the next 10 years? Sit with those images for a bit and then make a decision.
