Covid, to be cured may be enough of a cold

Has been published in Science an article dedicated to the immunity produced by other coronaviruses. You can find it here.

The authors wondered why nearly half of all people are resistant to Sars-CoV-2 never having been infected.

In summary, it is assumed that the person who has contract a cold from a coronavirus (from 15 to 20% of all colds) possess a cellular immunity, longer-lasting (estimated 11 years) than that mediated by specific antibodies that will resist 2 or 3 years.

The role ofimmunity crusade with other coronavirus was deepened in 2004, after the SARS epidemic. In the past few months, were analyzed in the lymphocytes of patients who have developed symptoms of Sars-Cov-2 in a manner moderate and severe (Braun, Griffins, The Bert 2020). In these patients were identified antigens that are common to the human coronaviruses, and not those specific to the Sars-Cov-2.

Explains in detail the epidemiologist Stefano Petti: “The authors have analyzed T lymphocytes (cells responsible for immunity against the virus) of some people and they have seen that those products against the spike protein of human coronaviruses hku1 infection, 229E, NL63 and OC43 are equally effective and in some cases even more effective against the spike protein of SARS-COV-2 (the same one used for vaccines).

This means that anyone who has had a cold by coronavirus, with high probability, it is immune against the Covid”.

The phenomenon is called cross-reactivity.”With the succession of episodes of infection due to the same virus, the T lymphocytes involved in immunity against viruses and tumors – increases the so-called ‘greed’, they become that is active against the specific organism that caused the infection, and against microorganisms similar. Without greed our immune system should be 70 times larger (Mason, 1998) and due to greed we can defend ourselves from micro-organisms that we have never met previously, as long as ‘cousins’ of the micro-organisms that we encounter all the days and we could travel without having to constantly dysentery and infections”.

Continue the Breasts: “We may define the human coronaviruses and the Sars-Cov-2 cousins because they use the same receptor to infect human cells and, therefore, necessarily have antigens similar against which turns on our immunity. This cross-reactivity is supposed to have been significant in the contain the SARS epidemic fifteen years ago (Hoffmann 2005).

What happens is that, at first contact with the antigen, the body produces an immune response that is quite specific to the virus; in the next contacts increases the avidity, that is, it produces an immunity which is also specific for antigens that are similar to the first, and lo and behold, after many antigenic stimulation (lots of colds…) the immune response against the human coronavirus becomes more ‘greedy’ against virus relatives type Sars-Cov-2. Is the advantage of antigenic stimulation and multiple. Something that you can get with the vaccination but imagine a series… endless inoculations”.

What can I say?

Long live the cold.
