Defensive Gun Uses By People Legally Carrying Guns: 22 Cases During July 2021

Police arrived at the 1500 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike, near Fairfield Avenue, for shooting reports at 3:51 p.m. on July 3.
Officers found two men suffering from gunshot wounds at a convenience store, and both men died at the scene.
Detectives said the victim, Tephon Reid, 24, of Chester, was shot by the suspect, Grant Ellison, 28, of Richmond. Police said that Ellison shot Reid before a bystander at the scene shot Ellison.
Officials are not looking for any additional suspects…

A man with a concealed carry license was grazed by a bullet during an exchange of gunfire with the driver of an SUV after a traffic accident early Thursday in South Shore.
About 2:40 a.m., the man, 23, was in his car in the 7100 block of South Yates Boulevard when a silver Ford Escape struck it and fled, Chicago police said.
The man began following the SUV driver, who stopped, got out and began firing at him, police said. The 23-year-old returned fire and the SUV driver ran away…
No one was in custody.

Deputies responded to the 23000 block of Raccoon Road around 9 p.m. on Friday in reference to a shooting.
According to deputies, the victim stated he was driving behind the suspect who was on a riding lawn mower.
The victim told deputies the suspect stopped the lawn mower, came to the driver’s side window, and began striking the victim in the face and tried to pull him out of the car.
The victim told deputies that he shot the suspect in self-defense…
No arrests have been made at this time…

Natchez Police Chief Joseph Daughtry said the shooting appears to be in self-defense and would not name the shooter…
Daughtry said the altercation allegedly took place between Coon and an unnamed man in the self-checkout line over the machine not giving 22 cents in change back. In an effort to defuse the situation, the unnamed man in line behind coon offered to give him the change. However, Coon became irate and started cursing, Daughtry said.
At some point, the unnamed man became the target of Coon’s anger and Coon and a woman who was with him followed the unnamed man to the Walmart parking lot, where it is thought the unnamed was going to retrieve a quarter to give to Coon.
Daughtry said Coon allegedly charged the unnamed man with a knife. At that point, the unnamed man drew a gun he was carrying. Apparently, the woman with Coon pulled a gun and pointed it toward the unnamed man and chambered a round in the gun, Daughtry said. At that point, the unnamed man fired his weapon, striking the woman…

Police allege that Elsayed and Mortellaro cut the store’s power to unlock its doors, slipped inside and were met with gunfire from a clerk.
At least one of them fired at the clerk, but Elsayed and Mortellaro were both hit during the shootout, police said. The pair allegedly retreated to a car outside and fled…

A man and woman were riding their bikes on the street Sunday in southeast Houston when a driver used his vehicle to hit the woman, knocking her off her bike, officials say.
Authorities say the male cyclist was in fear for his life and fired shots at the driver.
It happened in the 5000 block of Jefferson Street around 2:19 p.m.
Police said the driver told the bicyclists that they could not be riding around in the neighborhood. The violent confrontation happened a short time later.
The male cyclist had a gun on him and shot the driver, police said.
“He was in fear of his life, and he was trying to defend himself,” a police officer at the scene said of the bicyclist.
Police also said the driver had no right to tell the bicyclists they could not ride around in the area.
The driver, identified as Jose Angel Hernandez, has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to Houston police.
The bicyclists are OK, according to authorities…

One person was killed and three others wounded in a shooting Sunday night in Austin on the West Side.
About 10:45 p.m., two men and a woman were standing in an alley in the first block of North Menard Avenue when a 33-year-old man began shooting at them, Chicago police said.
A woman suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified her as 45-year-old Janina Ford…
A 49-year-old man, who was a concealed carry license holder, witnessed the incident and shot at the offender, according to police.
The offender, a 33-year-old man, was struck in the arm and hip, police said. He was placed into custody and taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.

Sunday’s fatal shooting of a 60-year-old man in Escambia County is now being investigated as a “Stand Your Ground” case.
Escambia County deputies say the teen shooter will not be charged at this time, as investigators believe he was acting in self-defense. The State Attorney’s Office is investigating and will make the final ruling.
The shooting happened around 5 p.m. in the 500-block of Corrydale Drive near Quigley Road.
Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons says the 60-year-old man thought the pair of young men were trespassing and yelled at them to leave. But Simmons says the passenger lived in the home and both were preparing to go fishing.

An 18-year-old accused of shooting and killing a man this week in DeKalb County was protecting his younger brother and won’t be charged, according to police.
Investigators determined that Tyrique Dawkins, 19, approached the 18-year-old from behind and pointed a gun at his head Wednesday evening at a Covington Highway gas station. The 18-year-old, whose name was not released, was able to get away from Dawkins, according to police.
Dawkins then is accused of physically assaulting the teen’s 16-year-old brother.
“Dawkins then physically assaulted the teen and shot at him,” a spokeswoman for DeKalb police said in an emailed statement. “That’s when the 18-year-old fatally shot Dawkins in defense of his brother.”…

It happened at the traffic light at 1300 block of Hickory Valley Road and the I 75 entrance ramp.
They say witnesses confirm that the shooting victim got out of his vehicle and began assaulting the other driver in his car.
The driver produced a gun and shot 44 year old Travis Peyson, who died later at a hospital.
Police are not filing charges against the driver at this point, but the case will be reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office.
Houston, TX, July 17, 2021 (ABC 13)
A resident east of downtown Houston exchanged gunfire overnight with a group of would-be car thieves.
It happened in the area of Nagle and Capitol Street and involved at least three men, the resident said.
The trio had broken into a car in the neighborhood when the resident said he got into his truck and confronted them.
“I start honking to tell him I know they’re breaking into that car,” the resident, who did not want to be identified, told ABC13. “At that point, they turn back and I did the same thing to light up the street. About half-way down the street, they pull out guns and start shooting.”
Another resident in the area also saw what was happening and had called police before the gunfire started, the resident said.
The resident said he pulled out his own gun and started shooting back.
“They chased me all the way down the street to the walking trail,” he said. “I can’t believe all three of these kids had guns.”
No one was hit by the gunfire, though at least one vehicle was damaged by bullets…

A man was sitting in his car Sunday by the laundromat he was using near the 3700 block of South L Street when the suspect told him he had a flat tire. When he got out to check, the would-be carjacker got behind the wheel.
The two men struggled, the victim yelled for help, and the suspect was able to grab the keys.
That’s when a witness who’d been working on a house nearby arrived with a gun and got the suspect out of the car.
The suspect allegedly told the witness with the gun, “Oh, I need that.”
Then the defendant allegedly took out a knife, and told the man, “Shoot me.”
As the suspect came toward him, the witness gave him a couple warnings before he shot him in the leg.
Investigators didn’t find the suspect with a knife but noted he was holding a pipe…

Two men who tried to rob some shoppers on Melrose Avenue ended up with bullets in their legs after one of the victims turned the tables and opened fire on the would-be robbers.
Surveillance video shows the brazen robbery attempt Monday night near Melrose and Vista Street.
A man with a shopping bag and two women are standing in a parking area when a light-colored Dodge Avenger backs up near them.
Two men get out from the passenger side, and exchange words, with one of them showing a gun.
But the robbery target draws his own weapon and fires. The shots send everyone scattering in different directions, with the car driving off and the two robbers running on foot in the opposite direction.
Police later arrested the two suspects who fled the scene on foot – and say both of them were injured by gunfire. Investigators are are still looking for the driver of the Dodge Avenger…
Fort Myers, FL, July 22, 2021 (WINK News)
A man was arrested after being accused of shooting toward a crowd before a bystander returned fire.
The Fort Myers PD ShotSpotter detected multiple shots fired Thursday afternoon around 4:20 p.m. in the area of Henderson Avenue and Thomas Street near an abandoned building.
When police arrived, they arrested David Williams, 50, after a struggle and holding him at Taser-point.
Witnesses say Williams had “an object” in his jacket pocket that he began banging on a bench – which turned out to be a gun. They say he did it multiple times before pulling it out and firing toward a crowd of people.
One of the men in the crowd pulled out his own gun and returned fire in the direction of Williams.
The report states Williams then threw his gun in a parking lot.
Nobody was hit by gunfire, and no injuries were reported.
Williams faces charges for firing a weapon in public; aggravated assault with a deadly weapon – without intent to kill, possession of a firearm by a felon, and resisting arrest…

A 16-year-old boy was shot and arrested during a confrontation with a man Sunday in Douglas.
Just after midnight, a 41-year-old man was standing near his vehicle in the 2900 block of South State Street when he was approached by a teenage boy with a handgun, Chicago police said.
The man, who had a concealed carry license, shot the 16-year-old in the arm, police said.
The teen left the scene and officers later found him and took him into custody, police said. He was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in good condition…

According to police, investigators believe the incident began when the man stole the shooter’s vehicle earlier in the afternoon. The car’s owner tracked the vehicle and confronted the carjacking suspect outside a restaurant, police said.

According to the Sebring Police Department, a woman was sitting in her vehicle in a parking lot near the intersection of Oak Avenue and South Pine Street when police say four to five men approached her.
Police say one of the men pointed a gun at her and told the woman to get out of the vehicle and hand over her purse and phone.
At the same time, another man entered the woman’s vehicle and rummaged through it asking for her keys, phone, and wallet.
The woman was able to get hold of her personal gun and was able to discharge it causing the men to flee from the area…
