Entertainment Television Works Hard at Making the NRA Look Evil
CBS’ FBI Most Wanted has an episode that starts off with a deadly mass public school shooting. CBS’ has the head of something it calls the NRF (pretty close to the NRA), which closely mirrors how gun control advocates describe it. The head of the NRF says that it wasn’t a gun that killed these people, just a crazy person, and he offers prayers. Obviously, the gun made it easier to kill the children, but the problems with banning semi-automatic guns aren’t mentioned, such as people using semi-automatic guns for self-defense. No comment about arming teachers. No word about getting rid of gun-free zones. The weapon was also inaccurately described as a military-grade assault rifle, though “AR” obviously wasn’t a full automatic weapon. Would ban all semi-automatic rifles, which constitute the vast majority of rifles sold in the United States?
There have been no machine gun attacks on schools in the United States. Honestly, there have been no mass public shootings involving machine guns since the 1930s. As the Crime Prevention Research Center has pointed out many, many times, television crime shows seem to think criminals are constantly using machine guns to commit crime. Criminals generally use machine guns so rarely that a 2016 survey of prison inmates only broke down the numbers for uses in crime of handguns (11.2%), rifles (0.8%), and shotguns (1.1%). There are few rifles, and the survey did not even mention fully automatic weapons. A similar finding is available from the FBI UCR report, where 2.6% of all murders involve rifles of any type and 0.3% of all murders involve unspecified “other guns.” There is a reason for that. Since 1934, there was only one possible known use of a civilian using a machine gun in a murder. And even before 1934, they were very rare.
