FBI’s Measure of Murder shows that Murder Rate Increased by 11.23% from 2019 to 2023, an 11.63% Increase from 2018 to 2023. The Murder Rate is Still Much Higher than pre-COVID.


The murder rate in 2019 was 5.168 and 2023 in 5.748, an 11.23% increase. As noted before, the Centers for Disease Control showed an increase in ~murders (homicide, excluding legal intervention) from 2020 to 2022 while the FBI data shows a drop. The CDC data showed a 27.96% increase from 2019 (5.83) to 2022 (7.46). The CDC data isn’t yet available for 2023. We will update the CDC results once the data is made available.

By the way, the FBI has also gone back and revised its earlier data and now shows that the murder rate increased by 6.2% from 2021 to 2022.
