Fox News’ The Five Mentions Our Research, though there were multiple errors in the discussion.
Fox News @Night With Trace Gallagher discussed our Real Clear Investigation piece on the FBI and violent crime. Dr. Lott’s new investigative piece at Real Clear Investigations is here: “Stealth Edit: FBI Quietly Revises Violent Crime Stats.”
Unfortunately, Dana Perino is wrong that the FBI was transparent in this data. Their September 23rd press release does not mention any updates to the final 2022 data. The report only has a vague footnote that says the FBI updated 2022 data. Unless someone downloaded the data last year and compared it to the new data this year, you would never know how the FBI changed the earlier data. Links are in the above piece.
Jessica Tarlov claims there is a supposed downward trend in crime. The 4.5% increase in 2022 was larger than the 3.5% drop in 2023, so it is flat for the last two of Biden’s first three years.
The mainstream news media used the 2022 FBI data showing a drop for the last year to claim that crime is falling. Will any of them now run a correction? No.
But the most important issue is that the FBI is data on REPORTED crime and most crimes aren’t reported to the police. The Bureau of Justice Statistics measure of total violent crime shows huge increases during the violent crime, with violent crime up 55% during the Biden-Harris administration — a 42% increase in rape, 63% increase in robbery, and a 55% increase in aggravated assault. The piece discusses several reasons why the FBI is missing many crimes that it would have picked up in the past.
