Houston Chronicle extensively quotes CPRC testimony before House Judiciary Subcommittee

On Thursday, December 15th, 2022, Dr John Lott testified before the US House Judiciary Subcommittee looking into the Uvalde mass murder and other similar attacks.

GOP witnesses testified that popular gun control measures, such as outlawing assault weapons or instituting universal background checks, would not only be illegal but ineffective.

Background checks on private gun sales wouldn’t have stopped any mass public shooting this century, even if they were perfectly enforced, said John Lott Jr., an economist and gun rights advocate. And a ban on semi-automatic guns would “make it much more difficult for Americans to use guns defensively,” he said.

“If you want to ban all semi-automatic rifles, what’s the alternative? A manually loaded gun, where you have to physically put another round in the chamber after you fire each shot?” he said. “If you face multiple attackers, where you fire and miss, or you fire and wound but don’t incapacitate the attacker, someone may not have the luxury of time of manually reloading the gun to be able to go and protect themselves.”
