When law enforcement has a chilling effect on speech: The FBI will be monitoring what parents say at school board meetings
In testimony on Thursday, Attorney General Merrick Garland walked his earlier statements about potentially charging parents concerned about what their children are learning in schools with domestic terrorism, but he will have the FBI monitor parent behavior.
The Attorney General insists there was nothing to be worried about because the FBI would simply be monitoring what these parents say or do at school meetings. Promises of such “unobtrusive” investigations or operations ignore the obvious: any national enforcement or monitoring effort is, by definition, obtrusive—particularly when it comes to free speech.
