Anarchy in California
With California in the throes of a “State of Emergency,” Gavin Newsom is vacationing in Mexico for a week. The Lieutenant Governor is taking over until Newsom returns on November 28.
You can see why he’d want to get away. This last weekend, mobs of “smash and grab” looters wreaked havoc across the Bay Area. The new policy, apparently, is that either a COVID card or a hammer is required to enter retail establishments.
Newsom’s bold response to the anarchy: “We cannot allow this to continue. Period. Full stop.” He then lamented that his own PlumpJack winery has been robbed four times.
Of course, Newsom has only himself to blame. He’s signed numerous bills to further decriminalize crime and ordered the early release of violent prisoners. Worse, he helped pass Prop. 47, the so-called “Safe Neighborhood and Schools Act” that all but legalized retail theft.
When I first ran for the Legislature in 2016, I was working as a prosecutor and saw the disastrous effect of Prop. 47. To illustrate the problem, I designed a “Prop. 47 Simulator” allowing you to step into the shoes of a police officer. You can try out the simulator here.
As crime rose, our attempts to fix the law were snuffed out by Newsom’s allies at the Capitol. They instead targeted plastic straws and ketchup packets as the true contraband. They supported Soros-backed district attorneys like George Gascon, who Newsom himself appointed.
But Californians have had enough. It’s time for a vote. When the Legislature returns in January, I am introducing a Constitutional Amendment to fully repeal Prop. 47.
