Of course, it was fake news. The true “unadjusted” figure is 14 percent. The new jobs report actually paints a dismal picture for California. Our unemployment rate is worse than every state but Hawaii and isn’t improving.

Yet that didn’t stop the Governor from gloating we are “leading the nation’s economic recovery.” Welcome to Gavin Newsom’s Potemkin Village.

The Legislative Analyst also just caught him exaggerating the state’s “surplus” by a paltry $38 billion. It’s like in Orwell’s Animal Farm, when the pig-ruler Napoleon fills up the food bins with sand, adding grain only at the very top, to make his starving farm look prosperous.

Newsom’s new plan for the Recall is to make it go away before anyone notices the bins are filled with sand. After months of trying to delay his day of reckoning, he’s done an about-face and now wants the vote sooner. His main defender in the Senate said he plans to manipulate the election date so that it’s before the “biggest threats” like “school reopening” in the fall.

Such shameless corruption is exactly why the Recall is happening in the first place. But regardless of when the vote takes place, Californians are well aware we aren’t living in the utopia of Newsom’s Orwellian doublespeak. The fine print of his January Budget he even admits it will be five years before our economy recovers.

With new leadership, I believe we can bring our economy back stronger than ever in five months. The next few weeks will be the most active at the Capitol since before COVID, and I’ll be fighting to immediately open all business and schools; to throw away masks for good; to wipe out all COVID fines, penalties, and license revocations; to incentivize a return to work; and to provide liability protection and real tax relief for small businesses.

We just got some hope from Pennsylvania, where voters passed constitutional amendments to limit their governor’s emergency powers. It’s time for a revival of liberty and self-government.
