The Parent Revolution
The election in Virginia was about parental choice in schools. While California may be a “bluer” state, our parents are even more motivated. 2022 will be a good year.
One extraordinary sign: A Recall against three school board members has qualified for the ballot in San Francisco thanks to the signatures of tens of thousands of parents – and SF’s very liberal state senator just announced he’s supporting it.
Meanwhile, thousands of parents are coming to the Capitol on November 15 to rally against Newsom’s K-12 student mandate. It’s been over a month since he bragged California was “the first state in the nation” to impose one. We’re still the only state.
Even other blue states are rejecting Newsom: New Jersey’s governor has “zero expectation” he’ll issue a mandate. Illinois’ governor said “it’s not something we’re looking at doing.” New York’s governor’s “default position is to trust parents.”
Monica Gandhi, a leading infectious disease expert at UCSF, has publicly withdrawn her support for Newsom’s mandate. Just this once, I’m calling for him to do the right thing and rescind it.
All of this and much more is fueling a movement of parents unlike our state has ever seen. Next year, this parent revolution can turn California politics on its head by electing leaders who put kids first and passing a school choice initiative for funding to follow the child.
Finally, thank you to everyone who responded to my last post about which office I should run for in 2022. (There was a clear favorite of the three choices!) Your thoughtful feedback has been very helpful in thinking through how I can best support our movement going forward.
