INTRO MONTAGE:
The 1989 film Parenthood is a humorous but touching look across three generations of a family system. The film’s protagonist (Gil, played by Steven Martin), despite not having the reparenting/self-integration vocabulary, is determined to learn from his father’s mistakes and apply them to his relationship with his own children. Throughout the film, he expresses great stress over the prospect of failing as a father.
Clips from Parenthood are interspersed with some of the advice of Dr. Daniel Siegel.
DISCUSSION:
– today’s theme: reparenting – started with severe abuse cases, but we could all use it
– Re-parenting is a process of giving yourself what you never got: love, nurturing, and protection.
– self-teaching is an important parallel to this process
– this practice aids with self-integration
HOW TO DO IT:
